Coffee Plantation arabica and robusta origins
The Background

Coffee is a very popular beverage globally, but what are its origins? Coffee is made from the beans of the Coffee plant. Over 60 species of Coffee exist. The two most commonly used to make coffee are Coffee Arabica and Coffee Canephora, also known as Robusta.

Coffee Arabica is assumed to be the higher quality of the two, as it has a milder flavour and less bitterness. It is also more difficult to grow and is therefore more expensive. Coffee Robusta, on the other hand, is hardier and easier to grow, but it has a stronger, more bitter flavour.

The origins of coffee trace back to Ethiopia. Legend has it that a goat herder named Kaldi discovered the plant after he noticed that his goats were more energetic after eating the beans. From Ethiopia, coffee spread to the Arabian Peninsula and eventually to the rest of the world, where it quickly became a popular beverage. Evidently, coffee is now a lifestyle!

Today, coffee grows in many countries around the world, including Brazil, Colombia, and Vietnam. The coffee industry is a major economic force. Millions of people depend on it for their livelihoods; from crops, to manufacturing, to other key stages within the coffee development journey. The process from bean to pod encapsulates a tremendous collection of individuals from all walks of life.
